The gemstone Citrine is the
official birthstone for the month of November. It is
also the Planetary stone for the Sun Sign of Virgo
and the accepted gem for the 13th and 17th wedding
anniversary.
Citrine is a variety of quartz
ranging in colors of yellow, yellow-brown, orange,
dark orange-brown, reddish-brown. Color:
Pale yellow to a Madeira orange in all of its
glorious golden and yellow colors. The yellow color
is from the presence of iron, the darker the color -
the higher the grade. Darker colors are more highly
prized, including medium golden orange ("Rio Grande"
citrine) and dark sherry-colored ("Madeira"
citrine). Also an earthy "Champaign"
color is found.
Other yellow gemstones are often used for the
November birthstone. The more expensive
orangish-yellow topaz, reflective golden beryl and
tough yellow sapphires, may be sold as citrine
substitutes.
